The Perfect Age for Newborn Photos: What You Need to Know
When is the perfect age for newborn photos? Newborn photos are a beautiful way to capture those precious first moments of your baby’s life. I often have parents reach out about the best age to schedule newborn photos. Here’s what you need to know.
Timing is Everything
The ideal time for a newborn photography session is within the first two weeks of your baby’s life. This is when they are at their tiniest and sleepiest stage, which allows the photographer to capture those adorable curled-up poses and sweet sleepy expressions. As your baby develops and grows older, she may wake up easier in new environments. Sometimes, parents cannot schedule newborn photos within those first few weeks of life. If this is the case, don’t worry – you can still get beautiful images. Depending on age, your photographer may need to make a few modifications – such as switching to a bowl or lifestyle session. The photo below is an example of a bowl session. The baby is swaddled tight and cozy and sleeping in a comfortable bowl.
The First 48 Hours
Once your baby is born, you should contact your photographer to start scheduling your session right away so they can block the day on their calendar. Discuss any theme ideas beforehand so the photographer is prepared. We made this Goofy hat in advance because we knew the family loved Goofy.
After Two Weeks
If you miss the two-week window, don’t worry! Your photographer should still be able to capture lifestyle or bowl poses. However, you may miss out on curled-up or unwrapped photos that are easier to capture when the baby is in the two-week window. It’s essential to work with a patient photographer who can photograph newborns at any stage because sometimes life happens, and you can’t be in the studio within the first two weeks.

Babies grow fast, and the first year of their life is full of milestones. The general age for milestone sessions is 3, 6, and 9 months and we usually schedule milestone sessions to capture crawling, sitting on their own, and walking. Reach out to your photographer to discuss capturing these important milestones. We hope you enjoy these photos from Baby N’s newborn session. His family was a huge Disney fan, and we loved creating all the different setups.
